March 17-25 - Gallery 1
This year, 12 first year SGH students (juniors), 3 second year SGH students (seniors) and 3 Katabami Scholars (juniors) joined the Australia Outreach Program. Like last year, these 18 students spent the week studying with their peers at our sister school, Kotara High School and stayed with host families. While in Australia, the SGH students continued their research and presented their work to various students, teachers, professors, and professionals. The students visited businesses and industries in the Newcastle vicinity and in Sydney. Click on a thumbnail and a larger version will appear in the viewer. We hope you enjoy them! Presentations to Kotara High School students
Tuesday, March 21
Visiting Newcastle University
Students will have a tour of the campus, followed by lunch with university students.
After lunch, the students attended a lecture by Seamus Fagan about Australian English. Before returning to their host families, the students interviewed Newcastle University students, faculty and visitors.
Wednesday, March 22
Visiting Newcastle City Hall
Students toured City Hall, had a short meet and greet with the Lord Mayor and had lunch.
Afterward the students explored the area, including the Newcastle Museum.
Later in the afternoon, the SGH group visited Summerhill Waste Facility.
Students learned about methods Newcastle City to reduce waste and ensure a healthy environment.
Thursday, March 23
Hunter Wetlands Tour
Students learned about the nature preserve and the wildlife of this region of Australia.
After the tour they enjoyed lunch at Spoonbill Café.
In the afternoon, the SGH group visited the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NYIG) for a site tour on Kooragang Island.
Following the tour, students attended a lecture about sustainability and the coal industry in Newcastle.
Friday, March 24
Leave for Sydney and returning to Japan.
