May 29, 2016 - SGH Fair Trade Team "3 Win Cookie" Special Event!
Special JAL Summer Edition - Ube Airport Terminal Festival - Yamaguchi Ube Airport

For this special event we have collaborated with Japan Airlines! The Terminal Festival is held at Ube Airport within the terminal building and in tents outside on the park grounds. It’s a fun opportunity for families to come to the airport with their children and enjoy games, food, crafts and learn about modern air travel. With the support of JAL, the Year 1 SGH Fair Trade Team set up a kiosk to spread the importance of fair trade. Visitors could learn about fair trade, get fliers, buy 3W Cookies, and even get a polaroid picture taken with pilots and flight attendants!

The team sold nearly 400 cookies to the public, another big success for the Fair Trade Team! Please visit our friends at Japan Airlines.


May 14, 2016 - SGH Fair Trade Team "3 Win Cookie" Special Event!
Special JAL Summer Edition - Yamaguchi Ube Airport

Japan Airlines purchased 500 cookies to distribute to lucky domestic travelers out of Yamaguchi Ube Airport. For the event we launched a special JAL Summer cookie with a label which describes how fair trade affects the lives of producers in Sri Lanka. We also created a flier with important information which further describes the purpose of this project. The Year 1 Fair Trade team helped hand out the cookies to passengers making their way onto planes.

At the end of the session, the Australia Outreach group presented a video featuring short clips and photographs from the trip.



April 25, 2016 – Outreach Report, Year 1 SG Course Presentation – Ube High School

The second generation SGH students presented their outreach reports to Ube High School, teachers and visiting guests. Each group gave a short explanation of their experiences and research.

At the end of the session, the Australia Outreach group presented a video featuring short clips and photographs from the trip.








April 14 - 17, 2016 – Kotara High School Outreach Visit – Ube High School

26 students from Australia came to Ube City during their Outreach to Japan for 3 days. Ube SGH Australia Outreach students were reunited with their hosts after a month since leaving Newcastle! Each Kotara High School student stayed with their host’s family. The visiting students spent a day at Ube High School. They attended classes with their host brothers and sisters, toured the school grounds, met teachers and enjoyed sports and club activities.

On the weekend the entire group took a trip to Downtown Ube, Tokiwa Park and the Zoo.




March 4, 2016 – 3W Cookie Official Retail Launch – Goo Des Goo, Ube City

Ube High School SGH students, Kenji Pâtisserie, Goo Des Goo, dignitaries and local press gathered at Goo Des Goo Café for a special contract signing. This contract affirms that Goo Des Goo has the legal authority to produce and sell the cookies. Until now, the 3W Cookie was available for sale at only special events (12/19, 12/23, 12/26, and 2/5 - those events are on this page, continue scrolling down). Goo Des Goo also gains all monetary rights for the 3W Cookie. Of course, the 3W Cookie brand will be retained by Ube High School and will continue to be a research project here. Upon contract signing, the official retail launch of the 3W Cookies has begun! The 3W Cookies are now available for purchase at Goo Des Goo Café in Ube City for 185 yen.

We would like to thank Goo Des Goo, Japan Airlines, Katabami Union, Kenji Pâtisserie, Libertas Kosan Co., Ltd, and the Ube Chamber of Commerce and Industry for all their enduring effort and support. This has been a unique opportunity for our students to experience the development of a real fair trade product. We are humbled by the success of this project and believe it really will make a difference.

February 22, 2016 – Year 1 SG Course Project Outline Practice Presentation – Ube High School

New SGH students presented their project outlines. Each group was asked to speak for 3 minutes and respond to questions from their peers and the finishing Year 2 SGH students. The comments were critical since the direction of these projects are still being developed. The Year 1 students are excited to continue thinking, working and growing their global view.

The next phase of the Year 1 SGH students is the upcoming Outreach Week - March 17 - 25, 2016. Half of the students will go to Tokyo and the other half will go to Australia. For details regarding the Outreach click for Tokyo or Australia.


February 5-6, 2016 – Year 1 Pre-Outreach Trip – Ube and Fukuoka

On the first day the SGH students visited Ube Industries for a tour, information session, and lecture on global business strategy. In the afternoon the team took a trip to Kyushu University and met with students in the new 21st Century Program. This was the first opportunity for the SGH students to present their project outlines. The students gained valuable insight and advice about their presentations and the direction of their research. Then the SGH students visited the Fukuoka American Center in Tenjin. There they heard a lecture The Importance of Acting Globally, and had a question-and-answer session with Margaret McLeod the Consul for Public Affairs.

The second day started with a lecture and information session concerning the basic ideas, structure, and expectations of the SGH course. After the session the SGH crew were off to the Tojin shopping arcade district. There, students spoke to shop owners and customers about marketing, consumer behavior, business and fair trade. We also spoke to foreigners working in Japan to get their invaluable opinion and alternative point of view. The final event for the trip was a visit to the TOTO Museum. The students learned about the history of TOTO; the founders and the products which are certified as Japanese heritage. They also learned about the development process of TOTO products.



January 25, 2016 – Global Exploration, Year 2 SG Course Presentation – Ube High School

Four SGH Groups presented their projects after 1 year of research. Each group was asked to finish within 10 minutes, present their introduction in English, and respond to questions from the audience.

The following presentations were held:
Aim for Eco-Friendly Ube City – Consider the 3Rs
Ube city has been trying to improve the environment for a long time. We want to spread the 3Rs and make Ube an Eco-friendly city of the world.

Let’s Advance Yamaguchi and the World Through Fair Trade
We want to revitalize Yamaguchi while supporting developing countries. And we want to make efforts to spread the idea of fair trade throughout Yamaguchi.

A Message to the World Through Sculpture
Ube city has many sculptures and we want to communicate their appeal to the world. Ube can unite countries of the world by a shared interest in art.

Development for Chemical Products Which Meet Customer Needs and Marketing Strategy Research
Yamaguchi has many chemical companies, so we want to further develop the level of product and industrial chemistry. We will research marketing strategy and propose production of a chemical product.

After the four stage presentations, all the groups gathered to stations around the gymnasium to present their work for the year. The public and special visitors visited the stations to listen to small group presentations and ask questions.


February 5, 2016 - SGH Fair Trade Team "3 Win Cookie" Special Event!
Special SADAM Edition - Salon de SADAM - Omotosando, Tokyo

For this special event we created the 3W x SADAM edition cookie. Salon de SADAM purchased 200 of these cookies to generously give as gifts to visitors and guests. On each cookie wrapper is a special handwritten message. Salon de SADAM is much more than a high end salon! It is a meeting place for people to share ideas and creativity. One of SADAM's many special guests was Miss Naomi Trauden, the 2013 Miss Teen Japan and CanCam exclusive model. We are so happy to know that our project made such a good impression! You can read her kind thoughts and comments at her blog.

December 26, 2015 - SGH Fair Trade Team "3 Win Cookie" Sale!
Yamaguchi Kizuna 2015 (Music Festival) - Civic Center, Yamaguchi City

The second sale of 3W Cookies took place at the Yamaguchi Kizuna 2015 Music Festival. This was a special edition cookie, featuring a design to reflect the event which was headlined by LE VELVETS (a Japanese male vocal group). The team sold the cookies at 150 yen each, 5 cookies for 750 yen, or a box of 10 cookies for 1,500 yen. The team sold out all 400 cookies.

December 23, 2015 - SGH Sculpture Team "Winter Crush Sculpture Tour" (Music Festival)
Tokiwa Museum Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition Space


The Sculpture team's project is called "A Message to the World Through Sculpture." The group is focused on bringing awareness to Ube's unique (and numerous) collection of sculptures. In keeping with this goal, the team organized a special 30 minute sculpture tour called the "Winter Crush Sculpture Tour." The theme of the tour was love and couples and the students provided commentary to more than 30 participants.








December 19, 2015 - SGH Fair Trade Team "3 Win Cookie" Sale!
Tokiwa Park, Ube City


The Fair Trade team's project is called "Let's Advance Yamaguchi and the World Through Fair Trade." The group is focused on fair trade as a means to help solve the global problem of economic disparity between developed and developing countries. The team has developed a fair trade product called the Win-Win-Win Cookie (3W Cookie) which uses Sri Lanka fair trade tea. The team developed the identity, packaging materials (label), marketing strategy and collaborated with local companies to develop the cookie. The recipe was provided by Kenji (a local patisserie) and produced by Gu Desu Gu (a local company). The cookies are being sold at 150 yen each.


The first sale of these cookies was here at Tokiwa park on December 19th. In less than 1 hour the team sold out all 200 cookies.


November 14, 2015 - SGH 3R Team and Effective Waste Collection
Centennial Park Stadium, Yamaguchi City


With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games on the horizon, the 3R Team continues to research good systems and procedures for waste management and recycling. On November 3 the team visited Centennial Park Stadium (home of Renofa FC) to study how garbage is collected during a soccer game. The team developed a plan to improve garbage sorting and efficiency and put that plan into action on November 14. The students helped with garbage collection and analyzed the results of their plan. New procedures in the future will be even better!





October 19, 2015 - Tetsuya Yasukochi - Go Global! (Visiting Lecture) - Ube High School

In total, about 800 students, faculty, parents and public visitors seized the rare opportunity for this lecture. Mr. Yasukochi is the Representative Director of the Practical English Promotion Systems Foundation and lifelong English teacher. The presentation was both informative and rich in humor, with an excellent pace that captured the audience's attention. The first half focused on the value of going abroad, the second half was analysis of the current state of English education in Japan and how it can be improved.





September 16, 2015 - Global Inquiry - Watanabe Memorial Hall, Ube City

At this annual event two SGH groups took the stage and gave presentations to a full audience of around 800 people. The presentations were "A Message to the World Through Sculpture" and "Oidemase Yamaguchi: Attracting Foreign Tourists to Yamaguchi." After the lectures concluded, all of the SGH groups had individual presentations in the lobby of the Hall. This event was covered by the press and open to the public.







August 6, 2015 - 23rd World Scout Jamboree

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree was hosted in Japan this year! Countless scouts from all over the world visited our wonderful prefecture, Yamaguchi. And Ube High SGH welcomed over 40 scouts from Portugal, The Netherlands, Korea, and Sweden. Our hardworking SGH students prepared a tour of our school and an entire day of traditional Japanese activities. Click on a thumbnail and a larger version will appear in the viewer. June 6, 2015 - School Cultural Festival

The SGH students assembled an informative exhibition of their projects on the 3rd floor. They prepared posters, brochures, journals, product samples from abroad, and even a video installation! While on the second floor they transformed their homeroom into the fantastic & bizarre (and slighty spooky), Strange Alice House!
